The Recruiting Game Is Broken. Here’s What Actually Works.
Every family we talk to has the same theory of recruiting: highlight reel, showcase circuit, ranking site, wait for the offers. Every college coach we talk to says something different. That gap is where good athletes get overlooked and families burn money chasing the wrong thing.
What athletes think coaches want.
Highlight-reel plays. A big-name camp on the resume. A star rating. The loudest possible signal that they’re talented.
What coaches actually want.
Film of full games, not just clips — they want to see what you do when you’re not the one making the play. Communication that’s timely and direct, not run through five intermediaries. Evidence you’ll survive a locker room and a syllabus, not just a 40-yard dash. Coaches are betting four years of scholarship and roster space on a person, not a highlight reel.
Where the money gets wasted.
Showcases can work — but only for athletes who are already close to being found, at events coaches actually attend. For most families, showcase circuits are an expensive way to feel like you’re doing something. The higher-leverage moves are cheaper and less flashy: full-game film, a direct email to the actual position coach, a target list built on realistic fit instead of dream schools.
What “fit” really means.
Not just roster need. Program style, academic level, campus culture, distance from home, the coach’s own tenure and track record. An athlete who is a great player but a bad fit gets a redshirt and a transfer portal entry. An athlete who is a good player and a great fit gets four years of development and a degree.
The access problem underneath all of this.
Families with connections and money get an insider’s version of this process — someone who tells them which camps matter, which coaches to email, which rankings are noise. Families without that network get sold the version built to extract money from confusion. That gap isn’t a talent gap. It’s an information gap, and it’s exactly the kind of gap FORGED exists to close.
Recruiting support at FORGED isn’t about manufacturing hype. It’s about giving every athlete — not just the ones with an insider in the family — the same real information about what actually moves a coach.
